Home / Bodrum / Turkey / Halicarnasos In Bodrum

Bodrum remains one of the prettiest tourist resorts in Turkey. The old part of the town with its white washed stone buildings draped in bright bougainvillea and fragrant honey-suckle, retains a bohemian atmosphere, while the yachting fraternity love the myriad of rocky coves and sandy beaches nearby.

Tourists from all over the world have flocked here since the 1980s and the town, resisting the pressure to build high rise developments, has spread out to include several villages in the adjacent bays. This greater Bodrum is one of the largest holiday resorts in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the high season satellite resorts such as Bitez and Gumbet are a magnet for young sophisticated Brits, devoted to the hedonistic pursuits of the sun, sea and dancing. For a more traditional Turkish atmosphere stay in the old town and minyofthe surrounding resorts. On the site of the modern Bodrum stood the ancient Halicarnassus, founded in the 11th Century BC. It later became renowned as the location of one of the seven wonders of the world: the majestic funerary monument of its ruler Mausolus (C376 - 353), gives us the word “mausoleum”. This stone was used to create the medieval castle on the isthmus of the harbour. The splendid fortification, called the petronium (from which the name “Bodrum” is derived), or the castle of St. Peter, was built by the crusading knights, Hospitallers of St. John, who made Turkey their home in the 15th Century.

Today, it hosts the fascinating Underwater Archaeology Museum, the largest of its kind in the world. Several medieval chambers display finds from the wrecks dating from the Mycenaean and Bronze Age through to the Byzantine era. All these artifacts were discovered in the crystal waters around Turkey
